The built-in Duplicates album vs. a photo cleaner app

By the VinciPhoto team. Updated .

The short answer: use the built-in Duplicates album first. It’s free and good at merging copies of the same photo. It usually won’t group different shots of the same moment, like bursts and retakes. If those are what’s filling your library, that’s where a cleaner app helps.

What the Duplicates album does well

Since iOS 16, the Photos app has detected duplicates and placed them in a Duplicates album under Utilities. You tap Merge to combine a set. It costs nothing, needs no extra app, and handles the common case of the same picture saved more than once.

Where it falls short

Take ten shots of a group photo and you have ten different images. Nobody saved a copy, so there’s little for a duplicate tool to merge, even though you’ll only ever want one of them. Apple doesn’t publish the exact rules the album uses, but these sets commonly don’t show up. The album also runs on its own schedule: detection happens while your device is locked and charging, and Apple says it can take up to a few days.

One real limit on our side: VinciPhoto compares photos taken on the same day, so the built-in album is the better tool for a copy saved long after the original.

Which one should you use?

  • Only the Duplicates album: if your problem is repeated copies from imports or saved images.
  • A cleaner app as well: if you take a lot of bursts and retakes, or you want to clear screenshots and Live Photos in the same place.

You can use both: merge in the album first, then clear near-identical shots with VinciPhoto. Remember to empty Recently Deleted afterward. Our photo storage guide covers the full order.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't the Duplicates album finding my similar photos?

The Duplicates album is built to find duplicates, and burst shots or retakes of the same moment are usually different photos. Apple doesn't publish its exact matching rules, but near-identical shots often don't appear there. To group those, you need a tool that compares what photos show, such as a similar-photo cleaner.

Why don't I have a Duplicates album?

Apple says the album needs iOS 16 or later and appears only after your device has indexed your library and found duplicates. Indexing runs while the device is locked and connected to power, and can take up to a few days. If it finds no duplicates, the album doesn't appear.

What does Merge do in the Duplicates album?

Apple says merging keeps the highest-quality version in your library and combines the relevant data from across the duplicates. The other copies move to Recently Deleted, where they remain for 30 days. That makes Merge a safe first step, since you can restore anything that shouldn't have gone.

Do I need a cleaner app if I already use the Duplicates album?

Not always. If your library is mostly clean and you rarely shoot bursts or retakes, the built-in album may be all you need. A cleaner app becomes useful if your camera roll has many near-identical shots, because choosing the best from each group by hand takes a long time.
